West Sussex's River Arun was known to the Romans as the Trisantonis - or "wandering one". This is probably a reference to its historic tendancy to breach it's banks and flood wide areas. So duckboards such as these are likely to have been used locally for centuries - millenia even.

In fact the river must be suffering something of an identity crisis now as prior to becoming the Arun it was, in mediaeval times, called the Tarrant - a fact much echoed locally in streets of the same name.

Whatever name you give it, this short section is close to the village of Houghton, as the river meanders through the South Downs.
