The Sussex South Downs - seen here at Chanctonbury Ring - are of a very modest height. Never-the-less they are quite able to hold back a weather front to the extent that the costal strip on the south side (to the left here) can be bathed in sunshine whilst the Weald (to the right) can be enjoying heavy rain - or vice versa.

This occasion was still more dramatic, as Chris explains: "... then, as luck would have it, a short-lived gap in the clouds allowed a fleeting patch of sunshine to penetrate through to the Wealden side too and I managed - in mid panorama capture mode - to swiftly retake the relevant section of the view before the clouds closed back in again".

They, the clouds, never did spill over to the seaward side.
