Paternoster Square since WWII has been a controversial location - largely on archetectural design grounds. The area, right next to St Pauls, was flattened in the Blitz (with, famously, the cathedral itself remaining untouched). Several schemes came and went - some just on the drawing board, others actually built and demolished again. Prince Charles was particularly vocal in his opposition at one stage and throughout the cathedral itself has gazed down upon each effort - perhaps scornful of all?

In any event, the final (or current at least) incumbant of the site is an airy Italianate piazza accessed via the relocated Temple Bar Arch and is surrounded by a number of cafes, offices and - for good measure - the London Stock Exchange.
