Low Tide and Fog at Deptford - 1

Every so often, particularly later in the year, fog will overnight creep up the lower reaches of the Thames to leave an early morning in which each bank is completely obscured from the other. And what does remain in sight - until the sun finally manages to break through - is all but bleached of colour.

This was so much the case on this November morning that it rendered a Deptford that seemed less 21st Century, more Dickensian 19th. Certainly, the pigeons seemed thoroughly miserable as they hunkered beneath ruffed-up feathers on cold steel railings that guarded the twice-daily drop to wet, ripple-lapped mud below.

And then, those first piercing rays of sunlight caught the edge of the sole remaining tower block.

Like an anunciation.
